NEW HIRE ORIENTATION “CAREER SURVIVAL” Deputy Jeremy Schepp Jefferson County Sheriff's Office

COURSE OBJECTIVES Prepare new deputies for: Ethical dilemmas they may face during their careers Career-ending decisions and how to avoid them. Deputies will know the reasons officers get decertified, and will identify the causes

CONTINUUM OF COMPROMISE Created by Kevin L. Gilmartin, PhD.

CONTINUUM OF COMPROMISE Begins with a sense of victimization... Moves on to acts of omission... Then to act of commission... and culminates in criminal acts!

THE CORRUPTION “STATE OF MIND” Corruption is prevalent in the rest of society Law Enforcement has a history of corruption Most officers have never received ethical decision-making training Some officers experience temporary selfishness Many officers do not have strong ethical role models Many officers are afraid of paying the price for “doing the right thing” Officers sometimes make bad decisions Agencies fail to provide assistance with stress The hiring process in some agencies is inadequate

“STATE OF MIND” Ethical police academy training is inadequate Administrators may create a working environment that promotes distrust instead of loyalty and teamwork High level city or county politicians interfere Departments lack procedures to identify and deal with officers who exhibit tendencies consistent with corrupt behavior Corrupt officers lack the guts and character to remain ethical Administrators ignore obvious ethical problems and let them gradually grow in both their severity and numbers of personnel involved

CAUSES OF DECERTIFICATION Greed (false statements/theft)‏ Anger (battery, excessive force, weapons, domestic violence)‏ Lust (sex for favors, sex offenses, sexual assault)‏ Peer Pressure (OWI, Drugs)‏

C.E.D.R.I.C. is an acronym that Sgt. Willie O. Murphy from Milwaukee PD created that means… C areer C areer E nding E nding D ecisions D ecisions R esult R esult I n I n C haos C haos
