Ergonomics By: Harrisan

History of Ergonomics The word “Ergonomics” originates form the words “ergon," meaning work, and “nomos” meaning “laws” The Outline of Ergonomics was made in 1857 by Wojciech Jastrzebowski and it was the first time that the term “Ergonomics” was used  At the beginning of the 1900’s was the time when ergonomics was starting to be established into work The rules of ergonomics extended to computer equipment in the 1960’s, followed by the study of computer software in the 70s and later also of the internet and automation (1990), and of adaptive technology in 2000 Terrible Ergonomics

What Is Ergonomics Ergonomics Is… The science of managing equipment at the workplace to optimize the fit between each individuals environment to prevent injury

Ergonomics Isn’t… Doing a task with repetitive or excessive force Long term repetitive force could cause "Cumulative Trauma Disorders" (CTDs) or "Repetitive Strain Injuries" (RSIs) These could lead to more serious conditions such as Carpal tunnel syndrome, Tendonitis, Tenosynovitis, DeQuarvain's Syndrome, Thoracic Outlet Syndrome, and many back injuries, caused by repetitive motion Bad Ergonomics

Bad Ergonomics Click On Red

Ahhh… Much Better Click Here Why You Need Ergonomics!

Benefits Of Having ErgoNomics We Need Good Erogonomics Because… It reduces cost of expanses because bad ergonomics can lead to large spendings on MSD’s (Musculoskeletal Disorders)   Improves productivity, by designing a workplace that allows proper posture and less exertion, this allows the worker to be more efficient Improves quality of life because ergonomics is about safe efficiency and if poor ergonomics are practiced then, as an individual gets older they will develop problems in their joints

Problems From Hunched Shoulders/Bent Neck Back Shortening of some cervical muscles may occur, leading to an increase in neck pain Monitor should be 20-40 inches away from you at eye level. You should be able to comfortably read all the text on the screen while still sitting in an upright position There should be no need for bending the neck if in this position or hunching the shoulders. Solutions: This problem could be resolved by using a computer stand. These help put less strain on your eyes, neck, shoulders and back

Problems From A Bent Back The back is made up of discs which are spongy and cushion the vertebrae in your spine, but discs have poor blood supply. Movement circulates fluid through the discs When you sit still, the fluid is wrung out, so you're depriving discs of nutrition Spending too much time sitting in front of a computer adds stress to the discs, which leads to chronic back tension The chair should have a backrest that fits the curve in your lower back It should be height-adjustable and be able to recline 15 degrees for maximum efficiency If the chair has armrests, they should be at a height where your forearms can rest comfortably with your elbows at a 90 degree angle The chair should be at a height where your feet can rest comfortably flat on the floor or footrest. Back Solutions Next

Continued… Back An ergonomic chair can help reduce or prevent chronic back pain due to its form fitting structure and ability to adjust height for optimum safety Ergonomic Chair Happy Back

Problems Caused By Stress On Wrists It is caused by long term stress on the median nerve/tendons; it runs down the arm to the hands Carpal Tunnel Syndrome(CTS) is one of the painful conditions of the hands and wrists This condition could be solved by excercising the tendons and muscles in the wrist Medication could also be taken to help treat this The induvidual could also purchase ergonomic equipment which can prevent CTS also Solution Back

Problems From Eye Strain Computer Vision Syndrome is a list of conditions when staring at a computer screen for too long Some of these conditions are Myopia(Near Sighted), Hyperopia(Farsightedness), Presbyopia(Trouble Reading Fine Print), Astigmatism(Out Of Focus At Any Distance) etc. You could use proper lighting to prevent glares or you could purchase an anti glare screen Desktop/Laptop You could also upgrade your display Solution: Back
