Equality between women and men Gender Equality in the treaties Article 2 TEU: equality between women and men is a fundamental value of the EU common to all EU MS. Article 3 TEU: the EU shall promote equality between women and men. Legal basis for legislation: Article 157 TFEU - §1 Principle of equal pay for men and women for equal work or work of equal value. Article 19 TFEU (Dir. 2004/113 on access to goods and services)

Equality between women and men EU Charter of Fundamental Rights Article 23: Equality between women and men Equality between women and men must be ensured in all areas, including employment, work and pay. Article 33: Family and professional life To reconcile family and professional life, everyone shall have the right to protection from dismissal for a reason connected with maternity and the rights to paid maternity leave and to parental leave following the birth or adoption of a child.

Equality between women and men Annual progress reports Provide a detailed assessment of the progress being made with regard to equality between women and men in Europe across the Strategy's priority areas. Take stock of the main policy developments and analyse progress achieved using a robust set of indicators.

Equality between women and men Current Context Education  59% of graduates are women in the EU  Early school leavers are mainly men. Labour market  Employment rate of women (aged 20-64): 63% - of men: 75%  Gender pay gap: 16 %  Women spend an average of 26 hours on care and household activities, men spend an average of 9 hours. Decision-making  Women account for an average of 17,8% of top level boards members of the largest companies in EU Member States. 4,8% of the chairpersons are women.  On average women account for 27% of senior government ministers.

Equality between women and men 2015… a historic moment for women’s rights and gender equality as it provides the opportunity to stake stock of a number of international and European initiatives, among them: European Strategy for Equality between Women and Men EU Plan of Action on Gender Equality and Women's Empowerment in Development th anniversary of the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1325 on Women, Peace and Security 20th anniversary of the Beijing Platform for Action a new framework building on the Millennium Development Goals
