Lesson 1 “ The Narragansett People ” Chapter 5 “People of the Northeast”

The Narragansett Way of Life The Narragansett lived in what is now the state of Rhode Island. They hunted, fished, and grew corn and vegetables. The Narragansett lived in a society based on cooperation. They all worked together to get things done.

the Narragansett Way of Life Narragansett lived in a society of cooperation. Several families lived together in a wigwam and shared responsibilities. What is a wigwam A wigwam is a cozy hut made of wooden poles covered with bark.

the Narragansett Way of Life Rulers Each Narragansett territory had its own ruler. What is another name that the Narragansett called a ruler? Sachem

Changes in the Narragansett Way of Life Roger Williams a European became friends with the Narragansett. He learned their language and trusted them. But then the Narragansett and Europeans started to not trust each other. The Europeans took part of the Narragansett’s land. But the Narragansett were angry. Then the Native Americans attacked the European settlers.

Results of the attack 1. Many Narragansett died in battle. 2. Many moved to Candada to join other Native American groups. 3. Some Narragansett remained on their lands.

Other Native American Groups in the Northeast Iroquois Confederacy Was the strongest Native American organization and still exists today. It is made up of 5 Native American groups.
