The Common Core

Why Are We Here? -Build Capacity (strengthening the skills, competencies and abilities of people) in regard to the common core standards -Grade level meetings will ensure that we have a common understanding of the expectations across the district. -Enable grade level teams across the district to plan Common Core aligned math units. (EM)

Mathematical practices (“instructional practices”) = NYS’s process strands, but are embedded within the CCSS content. Sweet Home CSD 2011 Mathematical Practices 1. Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them 2. Reason abstractly and quantitatively 3. Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others 4. Model with mathematics 5. Use appropriate tools strategically 6. Attend to precision 7. Look for and make use of structure 8. Look for and express regularity in repeated reasoning

Sweet Home CSD Common Core Format Grades PreK-8 Grade Domain Cluster Standard

CCSS Domains: = CC….Counting and Cardinality OA….Operations and Algebraic Thinking NBT...Number and Operations in Base Ten MD….Measurement and Data G……Geometry RP…..Ratios and Proportional Relationships NS…..The Number System EE…..Expressions and Equations F…….Functions SP…..Statistics and Probability Sweet Home CSD Terminology PreK-8 NYS Strands (content/process): Content N….. Number Sense & Operations A….. Algebra G…..Geometry M…..Measurement S…..Statistics & Probability Process PS…Problem Solving RP…Reasoning & Proof CM…Communications CN….Connections R……Representation Note: CCSS does not differentiate between Process “Standards” and Content “standards.” The Process is built into the Content.

“Performance Indicator” (NYS) = “Standard” (CCSS) Labeling system is similar: Sweet Home CSD Terminology PreK-8

Common Core Vocabulary Fluent- “Fast and Accurate”  Does not necessarily mean mentally. Mentally-In your head without paper and pencil. From Memory-Instant recall of facts. Standard Algorithm- Any algorithm that allows students to compute sums, differences, quotients and products based on place value including partials and "traditional"

Concepts 1) The Common Core is based on a number sense approach. Therefore, understanding of addition and multiplication from memory implies understanding of subtraction and division.* *See 2.OA.2

The End Game There is less, but it is very focused The specific is the end goal, how we get there is what will change Understand each standard at a deeper level- what is the standard requiring students to know and be able to do

Standards Walk Thru one set of grade level common core standards one set of the common core standards unpacked North Carolina one engage NY – NYS Common Core Sample Questions one grade level Testing Program Guidance September-April / May- June ( for grades 3-5 only) Materials

Sample New York State- 3rd questions/math-grade-3.pdf

NYS Sample Question – 4th questions/math-grade-4.pdf

New York State Sample Question – 5th questions/math-grade-5.pdf

These Questions Are NOT Test Samplers These sample questions are a change from what NYSED has traditionally provided to schools to illustrate changes to assessments. They were developed primarily for the purposes of communications and training. They are not test samplers, and are not meant to mirror full‐length assessments.

How to Use Different Aspects of the Sample Questions Interpret the way the standards are conceptualized in each question. Note the multiple ways the standard is assessed throughout the sample questions. Take note of numbers (e.g., fractions instead of whole numbers) used in the samples. Pay attention to the strong distractors in each multiple‐choice question. Don’t consider these questions to be the only way the standard will be assessed. Don’t assume that the sample questions represent a mini‐version of future state assessments.
