Associate Fellows are AIAA members who have accomplished or been in charge of important engineering or scientific work, or have done original work of outstanding merit, or have otherwise made outstanding contributions to the arts, sciences, or technology of aeronautics or astronautics. Reminder

 Would be good to give some insight into how this process works. Most people will know nothing about how the evaluations are done. Some insight into numbers of reviewers, how packages are scored, reconciling disparate scores, timelines, etc. would be helpful How the Evaluation Board Works

 AIAA involvement improves nomination being selected.  Involvement can be at section, region or national level.  Section involvement  Quick way to improve your resume and strengthen package since opportunities are continuous throughout the year.  Being a section officer is NOT the only way to get involved.  Activity with other professional organizations also helps. [Are you talking strictly about tech societies or also including other community involvement, e.g. Boy Scout troop leader, church involvement. Etc.?] Other Professional

 Reference letters make or break the nomination  It is the nominee’s responsibility to identify references who can vouch for the quality of his or her work.  References must be current AIAA members in the grade of Associate Fellow or higher  Lapsed members or non-members cannot be references regardless of how distinguished they are The Importance of References

 Do’s  If you don’t know the nominee well, get to know the nominee, be able to give insight to the nominee’s accomplishments.  Speak highly of the nominee.  Speak of the nominee, not yourself  Be able to rate nominees high  Be consistent  Don’ts  Don’t agree to be a reference if not willing to put in the work to be a good one  Do not start reference letter, “I don’t know the nominee, but…”  Do not copy references verbatim.
