African-American Culture in America Food- “Soul Food” or a term associated with African American cuisine shows how of inexpensive products procured through farming or hunting can be given a creative edge and turned to a delight of the taste-buds. Gospel music originated from this culture As a whole many identify as Christian with deep roots in the church

Cultural Events •Kwanzaa lasting from December 26 to January 1 to celebrate "good harvest, life and prosperity." •Black History Month (February was regarded as the Black History Month in 1976). •Martin Luther King, Jr. Day on the third Monday in January

Game Time To learn more about important people that helped shape both the history and culture of African-American people we are now going to play a quick game ! http://pbskids.org/aaworld/face.html After playing this game we have now learned different people who helped influence the culture that we are learning about today.

Review Get into groups of 3 One person will be the reporter One person will be the cultural representative One person will narrate the activity

Assignment The reporter will interview the cultural representative. Both students will have a conversation that gives insight into that culture, ie the two could discuss Kwanza and how they celebrate etc. The narrator will set the stage by introducing the reporter and the representative and tell which culture they are talking about !

Wrap-Up Today we learned some basics about two cultures. We learned about the Hispanic culture and African-American culture in America. Remember just because someone’s culture is different from yours does not make it less important. Take time to learn about different cultures from yours! Remember the definitions of culture that we talked about and think about how that relates to your own culture !
