Kim Davis is jailed
For the first time since the Supreme Court legalized gay marriage in June, same-sex couples in Rowan County, Kentucky, will be able to pick up marriage licenses at the clerk's office Friday. Kim Davis, the county clerk, spent Thursday night in jail after refusing to abide by the High Court ruling on gay marriage. Davis said she couldn't go against her religious beliefs and values. The U.S. District Judge ruled that Davis would remain behind bars until she complies. In court papers, attorneys for Davis argued that she is unable to comply with the court orders because issuing same-sex marriage licenses "irreparably and irreversibly violates her conscience." But American Civil Liberties Union attorneys contended that Davis has no legal basis to avoid performing her duties as a government clerk. Government officials are free to disagree with the law, but not disobey it.” The judge said he, too, was religious, but he explained that when people take an oath to become a government official, that oath trumps personal beliefs.
In Other News Europe is in the midst of an unprecedented human migration. Fleeing war, fearing for their life, and dreaming of a better life far from the poverty and upheaval of their unstable nations, hundreds of thousands are flocking to Europe's shores. The migrants and refugees often times risk their lives to reach Europe only to be greeted by governments who can't agree on how, or if, to welcome them. An Australian champion sheep shearer has set a world record after clipping a sheep that had become so overgrown its life was endangered. The gigantic sheep, named "Chris" by a member of the public who found it just outside Australia's capital, Canberra, could barely walk when it was found. Shearer Ian Elkins volunteered to shear the mammoth creature, which had to be sedated throughout the operation. It took 42 minutes to remove the fleece, which weighed in at 89 pounds, a new official world record for the largest single fleece ever shorn. This sheep, which had escaped out into the wild, was bred especially for wool. Sheep like this need to be shorn regularly or they can have trouble and can develop serious medical issues and infections resulting in death.
