(brief) RTI OVERVIEW & BENCHMARK ASSESSMENT TRAINING: 1 st Grade MEASURING STUDENT PROGRESS IN YOUR PLC Lake Myra Elementary School * July 2009

Intervention Alignment ….IA Response to Intervention…RTI …. is a collaborative learning process of providing differentiated research based data driven instruction and intervention to both high achieving & struggling learners to predict, measure & evaluate academic growth.

Universal Core Instruction Benchmark Assessments PLC Collaboration Tiers of Intervention Progress Monitoring

RTI Pyramid Tier 3 – Intensive Individualized Instruction Tier 2 – Small Group Targeted Instruction Increasing Intensity Tier 1 – Universal Core Instruction

Desired Outcomes After TodayAfter Week 1After Week 2After Week 3 Know how to administer and score the fall benchmark assessments. Administer and score 5 students, then at the end of week 1, come back together for a troubleshooting and debriefing check-in. Administer and score 5 or more students. Check in at the end of the week if necessary. Complete and score rest of class and meet to enter data at early release day.

Benchmark Assessments  General Outcome Measures  “Predictors” “Indicators”of reading achievement  Big 5 Areas – LNF assesses Phonics  Standardized  Research based  Time Sensitive  Short for “do-ability”  CBM – Curriculum Based Measurement

Early Literacy – Letter Naming Fluency  Things You Need Before Testing  Student Copy of Letter Naming Fluency (not numbered)  Examiner Copy of LNF (scoring booklet)  Clipboard  Stopwatch – 1 minute assessment  Classlist  Pencil K- F W S 1- F

Things to Consider - LNF  3 second Rule  Self Corrects  Dialect and Articulation  Incorrects are: substitutions, omissions, stops  Skipped Rows  I and L font confusion  Scoring = total # of letters read correctly – ] after 1 min. number of errors = letters named correctly – Practice Video 1 – Practice Video 2

Phonemic Segmentation Fluency  Oral assessment only (no student copies) - 1 minute  Repeat directions exactly  3 second rule  Underline each sound segment produced correctly  Slash / through sounds produced incorrectly  Bracket ] after 1 minute  Discontinuation Rule  Articulation & Dialect  Score immediately – 1 point for each correct segment

Things to Consider - PSF  Incomplete segmentation “tr….ick” – 2/4  Overlapping segments “tri…ick”- 2/4  Adding sounds “t..r..i..ck…s” – 4/4  Elongated sounds “tttttrrrrriiiiiiikkkkk” – 4/4  Omission “t….ick” 2/4  No segmentation “trick” 0/4  Segment mispronunciation “b..r…i…ck” 3/4  

Nonsense Word Fluency  Standard Directions for 1 minute Administration  3 second rule – sound or word  Discontinue Rule – 5 words  Slash / for incorrect phonemes  Bracket ] for the last phoneme  Note: nonsense words b/c some students have a high sight word vocabulary….  Articulation and Dialect

Things to Consider - NWF  Segmented Words  Blended words  Self-Corrections  Sounds Out of Order  Blended letter sounds  Repeated Sounds  Insertions  

Next Steps  How does the benchmark assessment data fit into the PLC conversation?  What does the benchmark assessment data tell us?
