Lesson 3.7

 Today in class, I will…  Compare a fictional account of an event with a nonfiction account of the same event.  Evaluate an author’s purpose in selecting a point of view.

 Use the Think-Pair-Share strategy to answer the essential questions.  What is the connotative meaning behind the date, September 11 now?  Why was the meaning different before 2001?

 Under vocabulary tab in your binder place your word wall handout, and write the following definition.  Point of View: the perspective from which the story is told.  Perspective: one’s opinion or outlook on a topic.

 Responses could include the following:  Questions about things you don’t understand  Opinions about characters or plot events  Connections you make to real life or other texts  Predictions about how characters will react  Inferences about why characters are saying or doing things.

 Individually read pages in the novel, Tangerine.  Complete the your double-entry journal based on what your read in this section.

 Tangerine was first published in At that time, most people had no special associations/connotations of the date, September 11.  In Tangerine, the sinkhole disaster happens on the same date. How is this ironic?

 In partners, read the article, “A Stunning Tale of Escape” on pages  Identify the 5 W and H questions and answers them on page 184 in the “Notes” section.

 What happened during the sinkhole disaster and rescue?  How is the sinkhole disaster similar and different from the event in 2001?  How does writing in different points of view benefit and limit the reader?
