Proportional and Non Proportional
Proportional All direct variation equations are proportional. This means that proportional functions must: Go through the origin Be linear
So look at the hand out… y-intercept is not 0not linear y-intercept is not 0
Yes; y = 4x No; y = 2x – 7 y-intercept is not 0 Yes; y = 3.5x No; y = -2x + 4 Yes; y = -5x
Try writing an equation for the situation. y = 30x + 25 y = 1.79x y = 4x y = 4x + 10 y = 7x √ √ √
Any LINE that goes through the origin Any LINEAR equation that has a y-intercept of 0 y = -3x y = x y = 5x
y = 6x y = 1.29x
