SYLLABUS

This course (INTSOCI or Introduction to Sociology) is a foundational or general education course that orients the students to the perspectives, methods, and uses of Sociology. It discusses basic concepts relevant to the study of society and culture, including the primary components of social structure and organizations; the types and functions of social institutions; and the dynamics of societal processes and social change. The course highlights the understanding and analysis of the dynamics of changes in Philippine society within the context of local and global forces.

LEARNING OUTCOME On completion of the course, the students are expected to: Construct an online-portfolio (website) that will showcase their critical analyses of two major social issues affecting a particular sector of the society (e.g., children, youth, indigenous people, women, and urban poor) using sociological concepts, methods, and perspectives. Provide recommendations for interventions aimed at improving the lives of Filipinos particularly the chosen social sector.

Grading System For transparency and validation purposes, students will be able to access their grades via All students will be invited to register for an account. Instructions on how to open an account will be discussed in class. Below is the grading system.

CLASSROOM POLICIES Students are expected to attend classes regularly (on time). There will be no special exams for unexcused absences. Students will only be permitted to take a special exam upon the submission of a permit secured from the Office of the Vice Dean. After each class, students are expected to submit a comment sheet (for attendance and extra points) which you can download from the class website. Please avoid going in and out of the classroom once the class has started. Eating and drinking are prohibited at all times inside the classroom.

CLASSROOM POLICIES Articulate your ideas and opinions. Students who will participate in classroom and online discussions will be given extra points. Please submit on time. To help save the environment, all class requirements except the comments sheet will be submitted electronically/online. Submission of work online also allows the teacher to check for plagiarism. Late assignments will not be accepted. Late submission of work will automatically be rejected by the online facility

CLASSROOM POLICIES Please do not ask/allow your parents to see your teacher during grade consultation. Also, please avoid asking the teacher for an extra project to earn extra points. CLASSROOM POLICIES Please examine your sense of right and wrong. Students of DLSU are expected to observe academic integrity. Plagiarism, cheating, and forgery are strictly prohibited and will be penalized severely. Inevitable situations may result in some changes in any part of this syllabus. In such case, the teacher will make an announcement in class or in the INTSOCI website.

PRELIMINARY REPORTS AND FINAL OUTPUT

Details of Preliminary Report Outputs 1,2,and 3 are in essay form. Maximum of 5 pages, single space, type-written to be submitted online. Include a cover page indicating the title of the paper and the ID numbers of group members. Do not write your names. Be sure to include the list of your references. Group yourselves into five. You can choose your group members freely and submit the names to me during our next meeting. Choose a group leader.

Details of Preliminary Reports For the Social Issue Essays: Identify two social problems. A social problem affects a group and not only a few individuals. Social conditions/ social forces instigate social problems. Social problems can be addressed through collective action.

Details of Preliminary Report 1. Your group is tasked to choose two social issues/problems that affect one social institution (e.g., government, religion, education, economy, etc) or sector (women, indigenous people, youth, peasants/farmers/fisher folks, etc.). 2. You are expected to write two essays (two social problems) and one policy recommendation paper.

Essays Identify the problem? Why is it a problem? History of the problem? Who are affected? What are the social factors/forces/conditions that instigate the occurrence of the social problems? What are the consequences of the problem? In what ways the other social institutions respond to the problem. Are they collaborating? What forms of collaboration? What can you recommend to help solve the problem. (1 page; third essay)

FINAL OUTPUT On Line Portfolio (Website) Your preliminary reports (essays) should be included. Not the entire text! You need to summarize. The website should be informative but not verbose. The website should contain original pictures or videos. You are free to decide the pages of your website.
