Domestic & Foreign Affairs Based on the slides, describe the and answer the terms and questions below. Define & Answer The Northwest Territory The French Revolution Jay Treaty Washington’s Retirement & Legacy EQ : How did the actions of Britain and France affect the United States? 11

The Northwest Territory As a result of the American Revolution, the U.S. gained the Northwest Territory that included Ohio. – Britain was still there 10 years later even though they promised to leave The U.S. bought the Native American’s KY and TN territories. The U.S. fought Native Americans for the land in the Ohio region until they won in 1795

The French Revolution Many Americans supported the French Revolution at first because they were following the U.S.’s lead They changed their mind when their new leaders killed 17,000 citizens in a few months Washington said that we MUST STAY NEUTRAL

The French Revolution Even though the U.S. tried to remain neutral, they continued to trade with Britain and France – Their merchants were captured and put in jail John Jay helped get the Jay Treaty signed to get their ships and people back in exchange for paying back war debt. – Britain would also get out of the Ohio Territory.

Washington’s Farewell 1.Warned against political factions 2.Believed that the United States should stay out of foreign affairs LEGACY The U.S. government works! The economy is better! No wars! Britain is gone from Ohio!
