Waves Do the wave!

Waves A wave carries energy from one place to another There are many kinds of waves that carry energy: Radiation (light), Sound, Seismic, Water Waves, Waves have a period, which tells you how long it takes for the wave to repeat itself

Waves The back and forth vibratory motion, or oscillatory motion, can be called simple harmonic motion (SHM) A pendulum will have horizontal SHM and a weight on a spring will have vertical SHM. All SHM can be fit on a sine curve!

Waves The high points on a wave are called crests. The low points are called troughs The amplitude is the distance from the midpoint to the crest/trough

Waves The distance between two crests or two troughs is the wavelength How often a vibration occurs is the frequency The units for frequency is hertz (Hz). It is the same as 1/seconds

Waves

Try some problems

Waves Transverse waves: When the motion of the medium is perpendicular to the motion of the wave. Examples: electromagnetic radiation,

Waves Longitudinal waves aka Compression waves: where the particles of the wave moved back and forth with the motion of direction Compressions are where the particles get closer together, rarefactions are where they are more spread apart Examples: Sound
