Page 2 > ILWS, Beijing, August 29, 2011, DLR Overview Update based on German ILWS Presentations in Prague and Bremen Focus on recent developments and achievements SOL-ACES Sunrise Solar Orbiter List of further German contributions to Missions on Solar Research

SOLAR with SolACES during implementation on the ISS in February 2008 (© NASA) Page 3 > ILWS, Beijing, August 29, 2011, DLR Solar Minimum EUV spectrum in August 2009 compared to February 2010 (© Fraunhofer IPM) SolACES: Current Status  SolACES science measurements (EUV 17…160 nm) and data reduction and analysis now on routine basis until end 2013 (solar maximum)  Recording of extended solar minimum (Aug./Sept. 2009)  SolACES data coordinated with TIMED/SEE (LASP)  Problem: Contamination by thruster propellants (hydrocarbons) during non-operational (cold) phases; mitigated by heating before measurement phases  Solar mission extension until 2016 envisaged

Page 4 > ILWS, Beijing, August 29, 2011, DLR Sunrise – some results  Inversions with different codes and techniques give - kilo Gauss fields without need to introduce magnetic filling factor, - temperature enhancement that agrees with empirical flux-tube models.  Sunrise finally resolves magnetic elements even in the quiet Sun.  Many magnetic elements are  100 km in size (even in QS internetwork). Lagg et al. 2010

Observation of the Sun from the photosphere to the heliosphere and in-situ measurement of particles and fields in the solar wind Launch in January 2017 Operations until mid 2024 (incl. transfer) As close to the Sun as 0,28 AU, up to 35° inclination Payload suite consisting of 10 remote–sensing and in-situ instruments German contributions: Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI, MPS) EPT-HET, STEIN of Energetic Particle Detector (EPD, CAU Kiel) HRI Lyman-alpha telescope for EUI (MPS) Primary mirror and coating for SPICE (MPS) Image sensor and readout electronics for METIS (MPS) Telescope Tube for Spectrometer Telescope Imaging X-rays (STIX, AIP) Page 5 > ILWS, Beijing, August 29, 2011, DLR Solar Orbiter (© ESA/Astrium Ltd.) ! ! ! ! !

PHI - Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager for Solar Orbiter I Page 6 > ILWS, Beijing, August 29, 2011, DLR Unique Science: The only magnetograph in space with spatial resolution of 150 km (Hinode does not achieve that) Provide B to UV imager and spectrometer with same spatial resolution (linkage science) First view of the magnetic and velocity field at the pole Stereoscopic helioseismic tomography Stereoscopy of the photosphere Possibility to measure the complete field of the Sun (360° view; backside)

New Technologies: Fabry Perot narrow-band filter with Lithium Niobate Etalon - First time in space Polarization Modulation by Liquid Crystal Variable - First time in space Full Radiation Transfer Inversion performed onboard PHI - Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager for Solar Orbiter II Page 7 > ILWS, Beijing, August 29, 2011, DLR
