Collaboration and Consolidation of Databases for Hearing Healthcare Evaluation Conference Call Agenda Friday Nov. 2, pm Pacific Standard Time USA.

Agenda for conference call: 1) Define agenda for meeting at AAS. 2) Choose a meeting time at American Auditory Society, Scottsdale, Arizona. Is 3-4 hours the desired time frame? Options include: Thursday March 7, 8:00 am – 12pm Saturday March 9, 5:00 pm – 9pm Sunday March 10, 8:00 am – ? 3) Determine who will be attending AAS and who wishes to participate remotely. 4) Decide if we want to open meeting to anyone interested in our agenda. Other scientists have expressed interest in participating in the AAS meeting. The intent of this initiative is to be all inclusive and promote collaborative research and shared resources to advance hearing health care. The benefit of including anyone who is interested is that there is more sharing. The consequence of including everyone is that the group can lose it’s focus. 5) Mentor future research through strategic presentations at AAS. (abstracts due Dec. 10, 2012).

1. RESEARCH QUESTIONS: What research questions are needing to be asked? What research questions can be answered using large databases ? (Optional: Please send Kelly research question(s) you are interested in exploring. She will collect and distribute to all members in advance of the AAS meeting. Due date Feb ).

2. ELEMENTS. Work toward universal definitions (e.g., how do we define hearing success?) and measures (e.g., tests of cognition, questionnaires, etc.) that will facilitate converging evidence.

3. DATABASES: Future directions in science and the need for infrastructure to support large scale research. Existing resources (e.g., NIH toolboxes – Howard Hoffman AudgenDB – Linda Hood) Need for new databases?

How to Proceed at AAS?  Work on Research Questions - What research questions are needing to be asked? What research questions can be answered using large databases ? Review research questions submitted by members of this working group. Identify a few that this working group would like to move forward with as a group? Or in subgroups?.  Define standardized outcomes and metrics of hearing loss and hearing loss interventions. For example, how do we define hearing aid success? (Leader – Louise Hickson).  Review of Cognitive Test/Measures available for different research questions. (Leader - Kathy Pichora-Fuller) What psychological (cognitive) measures/tools are available to us? What literature is there to support the cognitive tools that are being used? The purpose is to share with the group the types of cognitive measures that are available to investigators and the literature to support them. There is interest in developing a consensus of tests to permit data comparisons across research studies and databases.

How to Proceed?  Work toward a description of known public databases open to public for those who are interested. A website of links perhaps?  Explore if there is a need and/or funding support for large database infrastructure.  Should we explore funding opportunities to support large database infrastructure?
