Measurement Pages 141 – 166

 A centimeter (cm) is about the with of a fingernail. A millimeter (mm) is about the thickness of a dime. A person’s waist is about 1 meter high. Estimating & Measuring Length Page 143

 Choosing Suitable Units of Length Pages

 Choosing Suitable Units of Length Pages

 Conversion in the metric system means merely moving the decimal point. When going from a larger to a smaller measure you multiply. So you move the decimal point to the right. When going from a smaller to a larger measure you divide. So you move the decimal point to the left. If there is no decimal point, you put one at the end. Add zeros as needed. Metric-Metric Conversions of Length Page 146

 Metric-Metric Conversions of Length Page 146

 When changing to a smaller unit, multiply. When changing to a larger unit, divide. Conversion units 1 foot = 12 inches (in.) 1 yard = 36 inches or 3 feet (ft.) 1 mile = 1,760 yards or 5,280 feet Conversions of Customary Length Page 147

 Adding Units of Length Page 148 You can only add units that match. (i.e. add feet to feet) You should rename the inches when the sum has more than 12 inches.

 Subtracting Units of Length Page 149 If you need to borrow, subtract 1 from feet and add 12 to the inches.

 Multiplying Units of Length Page 150 Multiply by feet and inches separately. If the inches are more than 12, convert inches to feet by dividing. For example, 56 inches equals 4 feet and 8 inches.

 Perimeters Page 151 Perimeter means the entire distance around the shape. Squares – all sides are equal. Rectangle – the widths are the same and the lengths are the same.

 Choosing Suitable Units of Weight Page 153 A gram is a small amount. A sunflower seed weighs about 1 gram. Some books weigh about 500 grams. A kilogram is equal to 1000 grams. Some babies weigh about 3 kilograms when they are born. Some professional football players weigh more than 110 kilograms.

 Metric-Metric Conversions of Weight Page 154

 Metric-Metric Conversions of Weight Page 154

 Conversions of Customary Weight Page 155 Multiply when you convert to a smaller unit. Divide when you convert to a larger unit. 16 ounces (oz.) = 1 pound (lb.) 2000 lbs = 1 ton

 Metric Units of Capacity Page liter = 1000 milliliters 1 liter of milk is slightly more than 1 quart. 1 milliliter of water is about 2 large drops. To convert from liters to milliliters, multiply by To convert from milliliters to liters, divide by Abbreviations are L (liter) and mL (milliliter).

 Metric Units of Capacity Page 157

 Conversions of Customary Capacity Page 158 Multiply when converting to a smaller unit. Divide when converting to a larger unit. A fluid ounce is different from the ounce that measures weight. 8 fluid oz. = 1 cup 2 cups = 1 pint 2 pints = 1 quart 4 quarts = 1 gallon

 Conversion of Time Units Page 159 Multiply when converting to a smaller unit. Divide when converting to a larger unit. 1 year = 12 months 1 year = 365 days 1 week = 7 days 1 day = 24 hours 1 hour = 60 minutes 1 min = 60 seconds Though there are some months with 31 days, and some with 28 for our homework we will use: 1 month = 30 days

 Adding & Subtracting Units of Time Page 160 Add and Subtract like units only!

 Computing Elapsed Time Page 161 There are 24 hours in a day. The morning hours (midnight to noon) are called A.M. The afternoon and evening hours (noon to midnight) are called P.M. To count hours from morning to afternoon, you must count the time to noon and then add the afternoon time. Draw a clock, and use it if it helps. To count time from one day to later the next day, you must add 24 hours.

 Finding Fractional Parts Page 162 To find a fractional part, divide the number of units in the part by the number of units in the whole. You must have the same kind of parts in the numerator and the denominator; for example, dollars, or minutes, or inches.

 Using Units of Temperature Page 164 o F means “degrees Fahrenheit.” o C means “degrees Celsius.” Water freezes at 0 o C (32 o F) Water boils at 100 o C (212 o F) Conversion formula o C = (5/9)( o F – 32) o F = (5/9)( o C) + 32
