Warm-up 12/9/15: Complete the EOC Practice on Transcription that you picked up when you entered. You may write on this sheet Choose the best answer Provide an explanation to justify why you selected the answer that you did. Use your notes to help you answer the questions.
At your station you will find three DNA sequences, transcribe the complementary RNA sequences on your warm-up sheet for this week. Label this practice “Transcription Station 1”

So… Now we know the DNA codes for the proteins that need to be made.. And, that mRNA picks that code up and brings it to the ribosome. But…then what?
Lost in Translation What does translation mean? When have you had to translate something?
What is TRANSLATION? The GOAL of TRANSLATION is to link amino acids together to make PROTEINS RNA PROTEIN
Proteins
Function 1.Build and repair body tissue 2.Fight diseases (antibodies) 3.Send messages (hormones) 4.Control reactions (enzymes) 5.Maintain homeostasis = regulate the body Subunits Amino Acids Pictures
Where does TRANSLATION take place? The CYTOPLASM and RIBOSOMES CYTOPLASM: because the mRNA travels our of the nucleus into the cytoplasm on the way to the Ribosome RIBOSOME: because this is where the proteins are actually made
What are the STEPS of Translation? 1. mRNA attaches to the ribosome 1. Ribosome “reads” the mRNA groups in THREE BASES = a CODON 1. a. Each CODON codes for a certain amino acid 2. A tRNA molecule comes along with the right ANTICODON to match the CODON 1. CODON = AAA ANTICODON = 2. CODON = UAG ANTICODON = 3. The tRNA molecules “carries” the amino acids and links them together with PEPTIDE bonds to make a PROTEIN
What is another name for PROTEINS? POLYPEPTIDES because they are made of many PEPTIDE BONDS
IMPORTANT TERMS: CODON = is a set of THREE NITROGEN BASES ONE CODON = ONE AMINO ACID TRANSCRIPTION = DNA mRNA (in nucleus) TRANSLATION = RNA PROTEIN (in cytoplasm/ribosome)
But… What does this actually look like?
