What is the IRA? - - abbreviation for - - Irish Republican Army - - Irish republican revolutionary military organisation (fought for the Independence of Ireland) - - operated from 1916 to present day

The history of the ‘old’ IRA - - descended from the Irish Volunteers and the Irish Citizen Army - - you can see connections between the IRA and the political party ‘Sinn Féin’ till this day

War of Independence (war against the Crown forces from 1919 till July 1921) Three phases: - - re-organisation of the Irish Volunteers - - attacks on the fortified police barracks - - ambush tactics
