Is the MEANING behind a work of literature. It’s the central message. What does the author want me to remember?
Themes about emotions and experiences that are common across time periods and cultures. What are some examples?
“When it comes to war, there are no winners.” “Difficult choices are part of growing up.” “Love binds people together.” “You get out of something what you put into it.”
THEME is not the SUBJECT of the text, it’s and insight or idea about the subject. Subject: Love Theme: Love conquers all. Subject: War Theme: When it comes to war, there are no winners.
Some works of literature have more than one theme. Dr. Seuss’ Green Eggs and Ham has two themes… #1: Don’t be afraid to try something new. #2: People aren’t always what they seem.
