Make Work Fun Chapter 14

We are happiest with Working in professional areas we show interest in during ages 7 to 14 Are you following your passion? Looking Back Exercise

Factors that Matter for Work Enjoyment Autonomy Opportunities for growth and learning Positive Triggers Ability to cope with problems and to handle them in a way that does not compromise your ethics and values Internal locus of control vs. external locus of control

Winners lose more than losers But they’re winners because they stay in the game

Motivators IntrinsicExtrinsic Comes from within the person Comes from external world; other people Incites passionHelps set goals Makes you feel goodHeightens expectation Rewards you while you work Rewards you outside work afterward

Flow A state in which people find their work exhilarating and in which they perform their best no matter what type of work they do Flow occurs when our skills are fully engaged and we feel ourselves stretching to meet challenges We become lost in our work smoothly, effortlessly, with adaptability Flow is pleasurable

Most common emotional state… During leisure was apathy Csikzentmilhayle: People live at two extremes –Stressed by work or obligations –They are bored by spending their leisure time on activities that were passive

Flow as an optional experience Is characterized by: –A sense of playfulness –A feeling of being in control –Concentration and highly focused attention –Mental enjoyment of activity for its own sake –A distorted sense of time –A match between the challenge at hand and one’s skills

The pathway to flow Make it a game Have a powerful goal Focus Surrender to the process Experience ecstasy (not the pill) Create peak productivity

Problems in the workplace Substance Abuse Difficult People Sexual Harassment Burnout –A collection of physical, emotional and mental reactions that reflect exhaustion Lack of Advancement –Mentor helps us realize How things work in the environment The accepted norms for behavior Who key people are in the organization How one can get ahead

Sexual Harassment A company may be held liable if they are informed of sexual harassment and ignore it Quid pro quo – getting something for giving something, such as a person in authority demanding sexual favors to keep a job benefit Hostile environment – –A co-worker or supervisor engages in unwanted sex-based behavior which renders the workplace intimidating, or hostile –The purpose is to unreasonably interfere with work performance

Sexual Harassment Protection Know the organization's policy on sexual harassment Let the offending individual know you are irritated by the behavior Document such events If offense is repeated, complain to someone in authority Keep records of your work issues (a log) Seek help from an attorney Keep your spirits high

Discrimination According to EEO –Can not discriminate based on: Race Age Color Religion Disability National origin Sex Reprisal –Disciplinary action for raising an allegation of discrimination
