TEST PREPARATION How do I effectively prepare for a test?

1. Keep a record of what you are learning. Take notes in all classes, picking out important pieces of information. Take notes on reading assignments. Look at pictures, captions, headings, and boldfaced words. Look over all notes. Develop left-side questions and write a summary. Review your notes within 24 hours of taking them and once a week until the test. Before the test, review the notes by testing yourself using the left-side questions. Keep all your notes organized by subject and date.

2. How to organize what you are learning. Keep an updated, detailed planner. Keep an organized binder. Divide each separate subject into topics such as vocabulary, homework, handouts, and tests. Keep all homework, handouts, and test in your binder. Keep your work in order by date, most recent work on top. Keep your binder neat, with all papers three-hole punched in a section.

3. How to study for a test. ASK QUESTIONS: What kind of test will it be? (short quiz, test on entire unit, major cumulative exam) What skills/concepts/topics will be tested? What type of test will it be? (multiple choice, fill-in the blank, short answer)

3. How to study for a test. (cont) ORGANIZE AND REREAD YOUR NOTES: Review your notes at least once per week. 1. Focus on key words/phrases as you review. 2. Use symbols to show your level of understanding: + = I know this information. ? = I am aware of this information but need more studying. - = I do not know this information. Review the most important notes to refresh your memory.

3. How to study for a test. (cont) REVIEW FOR THE TEST Read difficult material out loud when reviewing. Have a friend or family member quiz you. Make flashcards.

4. How to be physically and mentally ready for a test. Don’t try to study everything the night before the test. Get plenty of rest and sleep the night before the test. Get up in plenty of time the morning of the test so you won’t feel rushed. Eat a light and nutritious breakfast so your energy won’t be low. Have ready all the materials you will need for the test. Have a positive attitude. Stay calm.

SUMMARY Use the paragraph starter below to write your summary. Your summary should be five or more sentences. It is important to prepare effectively for a test. One thing I can do is ________ OR The first thing I should do is____________.
