Answering Objections Someone says: “I don’t see how you can say baptism is absolutely necessary when the conversions in Acts show that people were not always given the same answer for salvation. Some were told to believe, some were told to repent, etc.” 1.Do different answers necessarily contradict one another or cancel one another out? 2.Does being told to do one thing eliminate the responsibility to do all things? a.Did the Ethiopian not have to repent? b.Did Saul not have to believe & repent? c.Did the Philippian jailor not have to be baptized? 3.Each was told the next “step(s)” needed to take, as some steps had already been taken, yet the need for one step included ALL steps (synecdoche). Someone says: “I don’t see how you can say baptism is absolutely necessary when the conversions in Acts show that people were not always given the same answer for salvation. Some were told to believe, some were told to repent, etc.” 1.D o different answers necessarily contradict one another or cancel one another out? 2.D oes being told to do one thing eliminate the responsibility to do all things? a.D id the Ethiopian not have to repent? b.D id Saul not have to believe & repent? c.D id the Philippian jailor not have to be baptized? 3.E ach was told the next “step(s)” needed to take, as some steps had already been taken, yet the need for one step included ALL steps (synecdoche).

Are driving directions contradictory if given from different cities along a travel route from WPB to Glacier National Park? Are driving directions contradictory if given from different cities along a travel route from WPB to Glacier National Park? Neither are salvation directions!

Answering Objections Someone says: “In John 20:23, Jesus gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins of anyone they chose based on any conditions they may or may not have met.” 1.Think about this! 2.This “theory” claims that ALL the jailor had to do to be saved was believe, while those on Pentecost were required to repent and be baptized. AND, it was left up to the apostles to decide when to forgive sins and when not. 3.Question: Did the apostles have the power to forgive sin? Or was it limited to God only (Mk. 2:7; 1 Jn. 1:9)? Someone says: “In John 20:23, Jesus gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins of anyone they chose based on any conditions they may or may not have met.” 1.T hink about this! 2.T his “theory” claims that ALL the jailor had to do to be saved was believe, while those on Pentecost were required to repent and be baptized. AND, it was left up to the apostles to decide when to forgive sins and when not. 3.Q uestion: Did the apostles have the power to forgive sin? Or was it limited to God only (Mk. 2:7; 1 Jn. 1:9)?

Answering Objections Someone says: “In John 20:23, Jesus gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins of anyone they chose based on any conditions they may or may not have met.” 4.God alone has the power to forgive sin (1 Jn. 1:9; Isa. 43:25; Acts 8:22). 5.Did God relinquish that power to men? 6.If different men were saved from their sins based upon meeting different conditions: a.Does God show partiality? b.How does the one gospel save differently (cf. Rom. 1:16; Eph. 4:4-6)? c.What gospel should we preach today? d.How should we tell men to be saved today? Someone says: “In John 20:23, Jesus gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins of anyone they chose based on any conditions they may or may not have met.” 4.God alone has the power to forgive sin (1 Jn. 1:9; Isa. 43:25; Acts 8:22). 5.Did God relinquish that power to men? 6.If different men were saved from their sins based upon meeting different conditions: a.Does God show partiality? b.How does the one gospel save differently (cf. Answering Objections Someone says: “In John 20:23, Jesus gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins of anyone they chose based on any conditions they may or may not have met.” 7.If someone is in need of having their sins forgiven and is studying to that end, is it fair to tell one man he has reached salvation a step (or two steps) before another man? 8.Return to the WPB  Glacier travel example: a.If three men are traveling from WPB to Glacier… b.Is it sensible (or truthful) to tell one in Atlanta that he’s already there? To tell another man in St. Louis that he’s already there? And yet a third man actually travels every mile to be there? Someone says: “In John 20:23, Jesus gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins of anyone they chose based on any conditions they may or may not have met.” 7.If someone is in need of having their sins forgiven and is studying to that end, is it fair to tell one man he has reached salvation a step (or two steps) before another man? 8.Return to the WPB  Glacier travel example: a.If three men are traveling from WPB to Glacier… b.Is it sensible (or truthful) to tell one in Atlanta that he’s already there? Answering Objections Someone says: “In John 20:23, Jesus gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins of anyone they chose based on any conditions they may or may not have met.” 9.The text of John 20:23 will not support this. 10.Did God allow the apostles to make up laws as they went? Some so claim that Jesus gave them the right in Matthew 16:19, 18:18 to bind and loose, and that heaven would follow the apostles’ lead (use same logic in Jn. 20). 11.But Matthew 16:19; 18:18 and John 20:23 do not teach any such thing. 12.Find one example of an apostle forgiving sins! Someone says: “In John 20:23, Jesus gave the apostles the authority to forgive sins of anyone they chose based on any conditions they may or may not have met.” 9.The text of John 20:23 will not support this. 10.Did God allow the apostles to make up laws as they went? “Truly I say to you, whatever you bind on earth shall have been bound in heaven; and whatever you loose on earth shall have been loosed in heaven” (Matt. 18:18, NASB; cf. 16:19). “If you forgive the sins of any, their sins have been forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they have been retained” (John 20:23, NASB).
