What are the largest and smallest butterfly ? The largest butterfly in the world is the female Ornithoptera alexandrae (Papilionidae) or Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing. It’s wingspan can be as much as 280 mm. It lives in the rain forests of Papua New Guinea and is classified as Endangered in the Red Data Book of Threatened Swallowtail Butterflies of the World.

What are the largest and smallest butterfly ? The smallest butterfly in the world is Brephidium exilis (Lycaenidae) or Western Pygmy Blue with a wingspan of as little as from15 to19 mm. It is fairly widespread in Southern USA.

How do caterpillers see? Most have six simpleeyes, called 'ocelli' or 'stemmata.‘ Some species have fewer than six.

Do male and female butterfly look different? The females are usually larger an entomologist will look for an ovipositer, which is an egg-laying device only found in females. The males have a clasping device in their reproductive area.

How do butterflies hibernate and aestivate? Butterflies hibernate as adults, eggs, immature caterpillars or pupae. To survive the extremes of the climate (cold in the winter, heat and drought in the summer, especially in tropical habitats) butterflies undergo a rest period called the diapause during which the vital functions are kept at the very minimum.

Where do butterflies go at night? At night or during bad weather, butterflies will usually hang from the undersides of leaves, or crawl into crevices between rocks or other objects, and sleep.

What makes their wings colourful ? Butterfly wings are covered with scales (that's the meaning of the word 'lepidoptera').

What makes their wings colourful ? Each scale is a single color, most of which are produced by pigments. The iridescence that's sometimes seen is produced from a reflective microstructure on the surface of the scales.
