Preservation e-Infrastructures, Certification & ADMP IGs DPHEP Status and Outlook RDA Plenary 6 Paris, September 2016 International Collaboration for Data Preservation and Long Term Analysis in High Energy Physics

Preservation e-Infrastructures – Bit preservation “in good shape” with regular media scrubbing / replacement / migration – “Dust sensors” recently introduced – will become increasingly important for very large archives / high capacity mediaDust sensors – Digital Libraries, CVMFS etc. all supported and widely used with ~20 year outlook – Growth: from O(100PB) to O(10EB) with decreasing costs & increasing realibility  A budgeted plan with outlook to 2035 (2050+?)

Certification Training for key (European) WLCG Tier0+Tier1 sites Training Plan for self-audit early 2016 (ISO 16363) Plan Significant overlap between these sites and partners in H2020 HNISciCloud  re-use experience also wrt ADMPs DPHEP experience (many labs at different stages of the data lifecycle) allows us to “see into the future” – LEP versus LHC – Laboratories moving away from HEP to other sciences – Different strategies wrt LTDP  Certification believed to be part of a long-term sustained implementation of LTDP

Outlook Part of the approval chain for Experiments at CERN is the Research BoardExperiments at CERN – Also committees for each accelerator, e.g. SPSC, LEPC, LHCC, etc Foresee a review of Data Management Plans – for data taking, production and analysis and LTDP – as part of this process – (+ updates during regular reporting…) Why have only large, collider experiments been successful in LTDP in HEP? Need to provide recommendations, tools, support etc – most “experiments” shorter lived and/or much smaller in terms of man- power But still quite different compared to many research projects – No separation of “archive” vs “active data store” – Close collaboration between producers, consumers (often the same) and repository managers
