The Raising of The Participation Age The Raising of The Participation Age (RPA) means that Young People will be required to participate in Education or Training until they are 18 by 2015 (unless they already have L3) – The current Yr9 They will be expected to participate to the end of the academic year in which they are 17 from The current Yr10 This means that your year group will be the first required to participate up to the age of 18 Keep, delete or change as appropriate

What Counts as Participation? Full-time study in a School sixth form, FE College Sixth form college Foundation Learning with a training provider Employment with Training Apprenticeship Pre-Apprenticeship Volunteering with training It doesn’t mean that they have to stay on at school!

The Council has a duty to: –ensure that sufficient, suitable places are available to meet the reasonable needs of all young people, and to encourage them to participate. –make available to young people support that will “encourage, enable or assist them to participate in education or training”. Young People have a duty to participate – but legislation to enforce this has been withheld for the time being Who’s responsible?

Schools have the duty to secure independent Careers Guidance for Yr 9-11 Post-16 Providers must: –Promote good attendance of 16 and 17 year olds –Inform local authority support services if a young person (aged 16 or 17) has dropped out of learning. Employers will have a duty to ensure that all under 18s that they employ receive accredited training (they don’t have to offer the training or pay for it but they must make time available for it) Who’s responsible?

Who are the students in your year group / cohort / school delete as appropriate who are at risk of not participating post -16 ? Discussion

How do you support them through transitions? How do you keep an eye on them?

Discussion What support do you have in place for them? How do you make sure they have the aspirations and goals likely to motivate them to participate? Is the curriculum and the teaching suiting their needs?

Discussion What and how should you be communicating to your students about RPA – to all? - to targeted groups? What should you be communicating to parents about RPA and how? What should you be communicating to other school staff about RPA and how?

Discussion As a tutor are you confident you can provide Information and Advice and know when to refer your form members to for expert guidance? – adapt if necessary How do / could you use tutor time to support RPA? Do all your form members get regular opportunities to talk to you individually / in small groups?

Discussion Activity Divide in to small groups – with each group discussing a different discussion slide. In your discussion group decide What actions should you take as a school / year team / curriculum team? Delete or adapt as appropriate In the short term… Medium term…. Long Term…
