WHAT IS HEALTH?
Health: The combination of your physical, mental and social well-being. Wellness: Maintaining an overall state of well-being; keeping a balance among your social, physical, and mental/emotional health. Target: I will be able to explain the key components of mental, social, and emotional health, and describe and explain the importance of the health continuum. Pg. 15
The Three Parts of Health: 1. Physical Health Deals with the body’s ability to function. Includes: exercise, nutrition, sleep, alcohol & drugs, medical checkups, and weight management.
2. Mental/Emotional Health Deals with how we think, feel and cope with daily life. Mental Health Includes: learning, stress management, spiritual health, and mental illnesses or disorders. Emotional Health Includes: The feelings about yourself and how well you relate to others, expressing feelings appropriately, and how well you meet the demands of daily life
3. Social Health Deals with the way we react with people within our environment. Includes: public health, family relationships, and peer relationships.
Health Triangle: Measurement of the different aspects of health. When one part of health is out of balance, you cannot be truly healthy because the other components can be affected.
The Health Continuum (Wellness Scale): Scale showing degrees of wellness. Extremes- optimal wellness and premature death. Goal: Living, making decisions, and practicing behaviors that are based on sound health knowledge and healthy attitudes Messages from advertising and television and friends can affect your health Health fluctuates on a continuum
Health Education: learning that helps one improve their health by increasing their knowledge and influencing beliefs, attitudes, and behaviors. Goals of Health Education: 1. Influences people to take positive actions about their health 2. Promotes Health Literacy- the ability to obtain, interpret, and understand basic health information and services in ways that promote your health and wellness Traits of a literate person: is a critical thinker, problem solver, a responsible and productive citizen. Then draw a picture in each section which represents this aspect in your life.
