Making A Decision

Warm-Up You’ve just found the perfect after-school job. It’s near home, it’s fun to do, and it will pay for the bicycle you need for your bicycling trip next summer. Then you make the basketball team that you’ve tried out for three times. Unfortunately, the team practices during the same hours as your job. How should you choose between the team and the job?

Decision Making Think about a time when you had difficulty making an important decision. Working with your table, come up with five obstacles of decision making Think of a time when you successfully made a difficult decision. What helped you make your decision in that situation? As a table, come up with five helpful factors in decision making

What is an ACRONYM? A word formed from the initials or other parts of several words

DECIDE D efine the problem E xplore the alternatives C onsider the consequences I dentify your values D ecide and act E valuate the results

Define the Problem Look carefully at the decision you are facing, and state the issue clearly

Explore the Alternatives Make a list of all possible alternatives for solving your problem

Consider the Consequences One by one, think through what might happen if you were to choose each alternative you listed

Identify your Values Decide which choice is most in line with your values Your values, the things you believe in strongly, affect how you live your life and how you feel about yourself

Decide and Act Use the information you have collected and compare each of the alternatives, and decide which one is best for you Act on your decision by breaking it down into smaller steps and setting realistic dead-lines for each step

Evaluate the Results Sometime after you have put your decision into effect, take some time to review it Ask yourself questions like: –How did your decision work out? –How has it affected your life? –How has is affected others? –What did you learn –If you could do it over again, what would you do differently? If you can still change things for the better, do it now.
