Galatians Salvation by law? Sanctification by law?

Paul now begins the defense of his authority as an Apostle. So far we have covered: 1. The introduction vs 1,2 2. The glorious gospel vs Astonishment that they would exchange such good news for something lesser vs The seriousness of messing with the good news vs 8-10

Galatians 1: But I make known to you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached by me is not according to man. 12 For I neither received it from man, nor was I taught it, but it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ. 13 For you have heard of my former conduct in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it.

14 And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers. 15 But when it pleased God, who separated me from my mother’s womb and called me through His grace, 16 to reveal His Son in me, that I might preach Him among the Gentiles, I did not immediately confer with flesh and blood, 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to those who were apostles before me; but I went to Arabia, and returned again to Damascus.

it came through the revelation of Jesus Christ. “The gospel did not come by human meditation or invention. It was not that Paul was a very clever religious person and that he thought up this amazingly clever gospel. Not at all! Paul was a persecutor, violently opposed to the gospel… the gospel is so amazingly different from what one expects it to be. Think of the Christian doctrine of the trinity (‘God is one. The Father is God.

The Son of God is divine. The Holy Spirit is divine. There are not three gods but one God’).No one would have invented it! It is impossible to explain! It is difficult to defend when someone wants to argue against it. What religious philosopher would have invented such teaching? What ‘religion’ believes that salvation is by faith in a crucified Savior?

It is a ‘stumbling block’ and always has been…. What philosophy could say ‘To the one who does nothing but believes the One who justifies the ungodly, his faith is reckoned for righteousness’? It is entirely incredible. The ‘natural person’ cannot receive it. But then what is foolish to human beings is the wisdom of God. ‘The gospel... is not a human gospel.’ (Michael Eaton, Preaching through the Bible Galatians p. 26

Paul was continually in the past, wasting the church of God!!!! The Jews religion?

Being zealous for traditions is no guarantee of rightness!

Paul is continually asserting his total independence of human teachers and the twelve when it comes to the gospel
