Ratios & Proportions Unit 1

Learning Target: I can recognize and represent proportional relationships between quantities. Essential Question: How can I represent ratios, rates, and unit rates?

Ratio - compares values; it is an ordered pair of NON-NEGATIVE/ NON-ZERO numbers Can be written in 3 different ways: 1. Using the ":" to separate the values: 3 : 1 2. Using the word "to": 3 to 1 3. Writing it like a fraction: 3/1

Ratio Examples: The ratio of boys to girls in class is 2:3. What does this mean? The ratio of apples to oranges is 4:1. What does this mean?

Try It! 1. Write a ratio comparing the number of people who are wearing glasses to the number of people who are not wearing glasses. 2. Write a ratio comparing the number of windows to the number of desks.

Rate – special ratio in which the two terms are in different units Examples: Paul can run 15 miles in 2 hours. Lindsey spent $45 for 9 shirts.

Try it! A water tank that holds 100 L is leaking at a rate of 2 L/min. How long will it take to waste 24 L at this rate? Draw a diagram to show your work.

Unit Rates – Rates that are expressed as a quantity of 1. Therefore the bottom number of the fraction must equal 1! (You are trying to find the amount of something per 1 of something else.)

Examples: The 6 th grade class is going on a field trip. There are 90 students for every 3 buses. How many students are there on each bus? Teresa, Cameron, Abby, and Randle plan on going to a concert. Together, their tickets cost $ How much is each ticket worth?
