The number of BS chemistry major graduates has doubled in 15 years … while nationwide, chemistry enrollments were unchanged or falling … and the number of chemistry faculty increased by one, from 13 to 14 Student enrollment

Meaningful engagement of undergraduates in scholarship is at the heart of our program The department received a development award from Murdock and Research Corp. in 2001, helping catalyze its transformation into a nationally- recognized program. External funding for student-faculty scholarship Dept. development award begins

Today about 1/5 of our majors perform research full-time in the summer supported almost entirely by external faculty grants. ~25% students work for two summers. External funding for undergraduate summer stipends

The strong culture of undergraduate scholarship means students participate year-round. Students have numerous opportunities to present their work at regional and national meetings and publications Students are exceptionally well prepared for graduate school and/or entering the workforce Students participate in scholarship throughout the year

Departmental culture Research active faculty obtain funds for scholarly work Supporting Western students to engage in scholarship Providing Outstanding year-round learning opportunities Preparing Future leaders in science and scientific fields
