Grid Computing Environments Working Group (GCE) Grid Forum #5 Marlborough, MA

GCE: Status as of 10/18/00 Chairs selected Mary Thomas, Dennis Gannon, Geoffrey Fox Secretary: Jason Novotny Web Site: Thomas Haupte Database: NLANR Clearinghouse Mailing List: Charter finalized, ready for final review Group identity clearly established

GCE Group Approach Avoid YAWP conditions(yet another white paper) Identify exemplar projects as “Best Practices” and work with them: user portals (Mississippi web portal, HotPage) Application Area portals and PSE’s Grid Application workflow management Standards Development for GCE’s how to use common/standard grid services, APIs, SDKs and Protocols Software Toolkits for building Grid applications Java and Perl CoGs, MyProxy, GridPort and GPDK Grid/Industry standard interoperability reference architecture(s) for GCE framework(s).

Definitions A GCE extends the users desktop by providing tools that access the Grid services. Examples: Portals: users, education – web, other CACTUS, UNICORE, HotPage, LaunchPad, Mis. Web… Workflow: systems to help manage large tasks involving multiple steps Applications – Cactus Collaborative Envs: WebDav, (a subset?) Object frameworks: application composition tools How do we consider: Shell/env, NES: Network enable service (Ninf, Netsolve)

Action Items: Finalize Charter: 4 week review, adopt ~11/18/00 Choose examples of GCE’s that are web based portals and task leaders (done) CACTUS/GPDK – Jason Novotny UNICORE – Dietmar Erwin HotPage/GridPort – Mary Thomas LaunchPad – George Meyers Mississippi Web Portals – Thomas Haupt Identify Tasks and “Atomic Tasks” How does each GCE do Files? Sec? Job submit? Papers: Informational, 1 page summaries of each by early January TR or Grid Working Drafts: prelim at GGF1, final at July Adopt the NLANR Clearinghouse project Summary whitepaper – keep working on this
