MID-TERM PRESENTATION June 21, 2000

Contents Week 1: Team Selection Week 2: Project Bids/Selection Week 3: Problem Statement, Design Partition Week 4: Conceptual Designs Week 5: Selection Analysis, Patent Search

Project Bids/Selection Examples: Sweep Chalkboard/Whiteboard Eraser Car Body Rotisserie Bearing Ratchet Automatic Bartender (Computerized) Abdominal Machine (Improvement) Multiple Egg Cracker and Separator GPS Stinger Locator

Problem Statement In current ratchet design, there is a lack of necessary space to pivot the handle far enough to lock the ratchet into place. Objective: Design, develop and construct a continuous bearing ratchet. Solution: Use of a drawn cup roller clutch to allow the transmission of torque in one direction and free overrun in the opposite direction.

Design Partition Five functional elements: Ratchet Head Socket Mount Continuous Ratchet Element Handle Reversible Mechanism

Conceptual Designs Examples: (1) Geared Figure 8 Wrench (2) Hinged Roller Ratchet (3) Fine Tooth Clench Wrench (4) Bearing Telescoping Wrench (5) Fine Tooth Crank Wrench

Patent Product Search 1 Dual Bearing Fishing Rod 2 Locking Rotatable Head Wrench 3 Open Head Adjustable Wrench 4 Offset Head Ratchet 5 Multipurpose Socket Ratchet Wrench

Patent Evaluation 1 Dual Bearing Fishing Reel – Allows reversability – Uses bearing design

Patent Evaluation 2 Locking Rotatable Head Wrench – Allows different positions for head – Uses locking mechanism in head – Allows use in tight places

Patent Evaluation 3 Open Head Adjustable Wrench – Allows use in tight spaces – Allows high torque to be applied

Patent Evaluation 4 Offset Head Ratchet – Similar to a hinged design – Allows use in awkward areas

Patent Evaluation 5 Multipurpose Socket Ratchet Wrench – Allows repositioning of handle – Useable in tight spaces
