Seminar Agenda Course Home Unit 2 Assignments Questions

What do you have to do for this unit? Reading You’ll be reading about the different approaches to instruction and the contradictory perspectives on each of them. Discussion This week, we'll reflect on your own beliefs and consider which model of instruction you support. Seminar During seminar, we'll reflect on how the information you've read influences your own perspective and consider the underlying issues that affect the varying approaches.

The Project Imagine that you have the opportunity to work as a paraprofessional at one of the following schools: Cedar Ridge Elementary School is a traditional school where English Language Learners are immersed in the regular education classrooms for most of the day and pulled out for one hour each day for instruction in English. Lakeview North Elementary School is a bilingual school where students are given instruction in their native language for most of the day, but immersed with other non-ELL students for selected periods (such as lunch, physical education, library, etc.)

The Project You need to decide which one you would like to work at Select which school you would prefer to work in and explain why. Discuss the benefits and challenges of the program at the school you selected and consider any potential issues you predict might affect the English Language Learners' learning.

The Project Some questions to consider: Why do you prefer this type of instruction? What information from the unit readings support this model of instruction? What are some of the negative effects associated with this type of instruction? What might be the social and emotional effects on the ELL student using this program? What improvements could you suggest in this program of instruction? The grading rubric that will be used to evaluate your projects is located in your class syllabus.

Project Write an essay that responds to the above questions in your own words. Support your paper with references to information from the unit readings. Your paper should be 2 pages, double-spaced, and follow APA format. You should include a Title Page and Reference Page (these do not count as part of the 2- page requirement). All essays should include an introductory paragraph, the body of your discussion on the topics, and a summarizing paragraph as your conclusion.

Models of Instruction for ELLs What is a self-contained classroom?

Self-contained Classroom A classroom that has all the same kinds of kids in the class. They don’t need to go outside of the class to receive services because they are all doing the same thing basically. What is the Paraprofessionals role in this type of classroom?

When considering educating English Learners, how would you define a Pull-Out Method/Classroom?

Pull Out Method Students are mixed up; some native English speakers, and some born in another country with a different language : they get pulled for a period of time during the day and give them explicit EL instruction. It is effective with beginning level students. The ELL teacher helps students acquire survival oral proficiency and initial reading and writing skills. What is the Paraprofessionals role in this type of classroom?

What is the Bilingual Approach to teaching students who are English learners?

Bilingual Approach Student receives both his/her native language and English as a second language in the same day. Bilingual instruction allows students to learn the different subject areas in a home language. Most students are eventually transitioned into a class that is taught all in English as they progress through grade levels. What is the Paraprofessionals role in this type of classroom?

Field Trip 009/12/bilingual-education-vs- english.html 009/12/bilingual-education-vs- english.html What is your response to arguments against Bilingual Approach and Pull Out Method?

Challenges of Bilingual Approach? Students feel stigmatized by being separated…. What other challenges do you see in the Bilingual Approach?
