Discuss Information relevance to our livesDiscuss Information relevance to our lives 1 Visualize Information Overload and its ramificationsVisualize Information Overload and its ramifications 2 Think about how (and maybe if) GAFE could helpThink about how (and maybe if) GAFE could help 3 Base objectives for this morning

Today’s Discussion Objectives Technologies Effects of Culture on information management Protocols that we embrace and that become habitual Attitudes that inhibit learning

Information Management Why is information management important in content delivery? Can, and should, students of all ages be shown techniques for managing information? Does organization and structure help with our learning, and maybe even our teaching? Do our varied learning styles, at various ages, adapt to increased amounts of information becoming available and easily accessible? reading, responding, deleting and storage

Multi-tasking – Real? Beneficial? Do you ‘really’ multi-task?

Why bother learning GAFE? Seriously.

Google Apps – potential uses in teaching and learning environments Google Docs – spreadsheet, word processing, presentation, form, and drawing Gmail - ??? – communication, file transfers and notifications Google + - communities of similar interests and goals Google Groups – collaboration – projects – concept development Google Drive – storage, content sharing, conversions, and access by numerous devices from any location with a connection Google Sites – personal sites, project management and tracking Google Translate – enhanced understanding of terminology

What “information” is the most important to you and your life, work and interests?

Information Illiteracy, Digital literacy or illiteracy?

I S TMI A “NEW” PHENOMENON ?

Google Apps for Education ApplicationSome potential uses DocsWord processing, Spreadsheets, Presentations, Drawing GroupsCommunication, projects, collaboration GMailCommunication, notifications, receiving student work Drive Sites Translate UDH, but also sharing files, and access from anywhere work Build specific topic resource sites Assist ESL students, or enhance understanding of words or phrases

Time Spent (minutes, hours, days, years) Things to be Learned Get Familiar Achieve Mastery Working Toward Mastery (“Outliers”, Malcolm Gladwell) Get Experienced

What do you use to view, store and retrieve your important information? Printers, folders and a file cabinet? Smart phone, dumb phone, phone book? Tablet, e-reader, Notebook? Desktop, laptop, super computer? Note paper, back of agenda sheets, papyrus? Other?

Parting Thoughts and Comments Should we, or can we provide guidance for students to manage information? What might be a realistic expectations for skill sets in IM? Do you consider IM important enough to introduce it to students? If so, at what age?
