Roman Schools

Do you think Roman schools had.... Desks?

Were Roman Schools free? Only rich people could afford to send their children to school…everyone else was taught at home!

What subjects did the Romans learn at school?

Literacy? Instead, they learnt Latin...

Learning Latin Latin was the roman language. Although it is not spoken today, some Latin words are still used now. Some football sheilds have latin mottos. This one means “pride in Battle” in latin.

Learning Latin Nemo: Nobody Quad: Four ETC (et cetera): And the rest Carpe Diem: Seize the day Rome: Roma

Maths The Romans were very good at Maths! History What sorts of things do you think the Romans might have learnt in their history lessons? They invented the first hand-held calculator…

What did the Romans use to write? The Romans wrote using wax tablets, which looked like this… They would use a stylus to scratch the letters into the tablet.

The Roman Alphabet The Roman alphabet was very similar to ours, but there are a few differences. What do you notice about the word below? It is all written in capital letters. The letter ‘U’ looked like a ‘V’.

Roman Numerals Roman numerals were VERY different from our numbers today! We are going to learn how to write Roman numerals up to ten…

1. I 2. II 3. III 4. IV 5. V 6. VI 7. VII 8. VIII 9. IX 10. X How do you think they might have written the number 11? How do you think they might have written the number 20?

What we are doing today… You are going to design and decorate a Roman nameplate. Then we will be comparing Roman schools to our own schools today.
