I NTRODUCTION The Academic failures of some of the Latinos being attributed to presence of heritage language at home deter the acquisition of English. This can be true since it can at times contribute to difficulties in achieving the academic dreams. This is true especially for the immigrants and those individuals who study English as their second language. This assumption can be carried on to the next generations of the Chicano student who can speak English though influenced by the Spanish language. I agree with the author in this point.

L ANGUAGE P ATTERNS Regarding to the generations of the Fuentes members having little contact to English language and Spanish speakers, it proved to have negative impacts on them with regards to learning English as the second language. The effects from this English language resembled the effects faced by the immigrant’s children when they tried to learn and develop themselves academically. From my point of view, the author is showing what happens in reality and I totally agree with him..

(Cont..) Consequently, shown that the children who were exposed had more abilities to learn English and Spanish effectively than their counterparts are true. The second generation being exposed to these languages only at school depicts to show high it impacts on their learning. The third generation students who were exposed to Spanish languages due to them interacting with each other at a tender age gave them the advantage to build up their learning skills and shoe sharp capability of studying English. This is indubitable as from logical point of view; it is very correct and concur with the author.

L ITERACY P ATTERNS IN F UENTES H OME From the fact that the Fuentes was The English- dominant by their third generation, it cannot be considered that was a schooling factor since the future generations were not dependent on it. Moreover, they perceived that once the English language has been acquired, it was complete. This believes of literacy emerged as the factor to be considered. This implies that the presenter of this information didn't much mind the impacts of not understanding English. I do not agree with the author on this, English ought to be considered as a schooling factor since it shows how fast a student can learn.

S IGNIFICANCE OF L ANGUAGE AND L ITERACY IN F UENTES H OMES With Fuentes homes having experienced language shifts to English depicts that many other immigrants in the United States have been facing difficulties in facing the language shift and difficulty in learning the English language. The Fuentes family view that language and literacy practices have contributed racial segregation and discrimination in learning institutions. To me, this has been attributed by the complexity and different backgrounds of the students in the school. The author is true and I agree to this point.

(Cont..) Fuentes homes have realized that the know-how for English has helped in identifying and stimulating the strong academic performance. This realization implies that in the past, the Fuentes family didn’t understand between the reading and one achievement on school performance academically. This is further indicated by the fact that parents expressed their opinions with regards to reading. Florencia remarks regarding the second generation also indicated that the immigrants night be faced with challenges in their process learning to read. However, by encouraging them to read and giving them a conducive environment, they will be able to learn effectively. This is true since environment also has a part to play in ones process of learning.
