Presentation transcript:

Quick Review Name three collinear points. Name plane EFG another way. How many points lie on ? What is the intersection of and ? Name a point that is coplanar with A, B and C.

1.2 Linear Measure Students will be able to find the distance between two points on an (x, y) coordinate plane. Students will be able to find measures of portions of segments and segment lengths on a number line.

Can I measure this? Line Segment – a set of points between two points. We name it using the endpoints and the segment symbol.

Thoughts? What is the distance of ?

Distance formula When working with diagonal segments, use the Distance Formula to determine the length. Given points , the distance, d between the points is defined by:

Distance formula Use the distance formula to find the length of segment .

Example 1 Find the distance between the points (-4,-5) and (1,7).

Foldable: Part + Part = Whole Betweenness(Defn) C is between A and B if AC + CB = AB iff (If and only if) A, B and C are collinear.

Example 2 What can be said about W, X and Y? Find WX.

Example 3 Find x and ST if T is between S and U, ST = 7x, SU = 11x + 1 and TU =17. *****Draw a picture first!!!!*****

Example 4 Find the value of x if C is between A and B and AC = 3x, CB = x2 and AB = 54.

Ticket to Leave 1. Find the length of a line segment with endpoints (8, 4) and (12, 2). 2. Find x and RS if S is between R and T and RS = 5x, ST = 3x and RT = 48.

Homework Do this exercise: Find the length of the segment with endpoints (-3, 2) and (-9, 4). Complete the book assignment: Pg. 17 # 23, 25, 29, 31, 33, 63, 65, 69, 71
