Collecting tracheid anatomical data: State of the art and opportunities Patrick Fonti + ~50 data contributors

Manuscript in prep 55 Authors 26 Institutes

The XCELL initiative … aims at creating a central depository for Xylem CELL anatomical and density data … to preserve, harmonize and allow global pattern analyses … at the service of the community

Motivation Structure – Function – Performance unchangeable and datable Tree performance Mechanical stability Hydraulic safety Hydraulic efficiency Response to environment

Cell metrics

Include 3 type of surveys AREA BAND ROW

Meta-data Tree Label Species … Height DBH Age … Site Label Lat. Long. … Device Software Resolution Magnification Unit Type survey … Custodian Name Address Environmental data? Grid e.g. CRU-data Ring Cal. Year From to …

Requirements Chrono- and double geo-referenced (unique) whole ring ≥ one metric adequate mass

(Current) data policy Inspired from the Intellectual Property Guidelines for the TRY Initiative” The custodian, i.e.; the individual that directly contribute with data to XCELL, maintains the intellectual property rights on his/her data. In case of request: – The custodian will be contacted and informed. If no objection is raised within two weeks, it will be assumed that the custodian has given permission to make these data available for the request in question. – the data manager has the permission to supply the data. – The requester send a invitation at an early stage of manuscript preparation. Co-authorship will be offered only to those who respond to the invitation with active contribution to the manuscript.

Geographical distribution

Link with environment Results indicate an overall decrease of earlywood tracheid lumen and cell wall thickness to high temperature and drought regardless of species and site conditions. In particular an increase of one degree Celsius during the summer caused a 5% reduction of earlywood cell lumen and wall thickness. Fonti & Babushkina in press Dendrochronologia

We also are confident … … that, by assembling a large network now, creative and unforeseen research ideas and opportunities will arise … benefit the whole community

Future prospects Improve database – Up-date data and harmonization – Web-page (e.g., Guidelines for collection and metadata) – “Publish the concept” First global analysis with climate Expand (density profiles, vessels, collection of images) Dream about a remotely accessible Roxas 15
