Operations with Rational Expressions December 7, 2015
Objective Today students will learn how to divide rational expressions and simplify rational expressions using addition or subtraction. In what ways does this concept relate to a previous concept? Essential Question
Steps for dividing two rational fractions Factor each numerator and denominator separately. Simplify anything (if possible) Copy the first fraction. Multiply by the second fraction’s reciprocal Multiply and simplify.
When adding or subtracting Rational Expressions… If they have the same denominator, add/subtract the numerator. Don’t add/subtract the denominators Simplify if possible. If they have different denominators, find the LCM by factoring the polynomials. Remember anything you do to the denominator, you must do to the numerator! Add/subtract expressions. Simplify if possible.
