DNA Extraction Lab PEAs

Purpose Where is DNA found inside of a pea and what will happen when we take it out? I think……………………..because….. Hypothesis

Materials 1/2 cup of split peas (100ml) 1/8 teaspoon table salt (less than 1ml) 1 cup cold water (200ml) Add 1 drop of soap Meat tenderizer Alcohol Filter/ strainer

Procedures Blend peas, water, and salt Strain out the liquid from the solid and pour in test tube. Add soap and swirl in test tube gently. Add a pinch of meat tenderizer and swirl gently. Pour equal parts of alcohol to the peas down the side of the tube. wait

Data Data Analysis Draw the test tube after procedures are done. Draw your test tube after 10 minutes. Explain your drawings. Explain anything you did wrong. Data Analysis

Conclusion Was your hypothesis right? Where is DNA found? 3. What happened with the DNA? 4. Meat tenderizer contains enzymes that break down proteins. What does this have to do with today’s lab? 5. In what real life situation would DNA extraction be used for and why? 6. What is the relationship between DNA, genes, protein, and chromosomes.
