Strategy activity What is the meaning of describe, explain and discuss? Describe an apple Explain an apple Discuss an apple

describe means to give an account of something, to say what it looks like or what it does, to give details about these things. The features or characteristics of something are part of a description, and a definition often includes a description. A description answers the questions "what is it like?" and "what does it do?

explain means to give a reason or reasons – an explanation answers the question "why?" or "how does that work?" If the text includes "because" or "so that", it will be to explain something.

discuss Means to examine something in detail so as to reach a decision. This usually means that more than one perspective is put forward and actively considered. So as part of discussions we may get "compare and contrast"

Word definition strategy Take the US or AS you are working with and identify the words students need to understand

Activity: Word definition Word definitions for functional modelling 2.5 In pairs one has the words the other definitions. One reads out a word on the list. The other matches with the definition Then the definition of another word is read and the other matches the word

Learning: deep and surface approaches

Functional modelling words and definitions Modelling practices used to enhance technological developments and includes functional modelling and prototypes. Design concepts include design ideas for parts of an outcome as well as a complete conceptual design for the outcome as a whole. Ongoing testing of design concepts for yet to be realised technological outcomes Allows for the evaluation of the fitness for purpose of the technological outcome itself Provides a basis for technical feasibility of the design concept and outcome A representation of reality Technological modelling Model Explain Functional reasoning Risk management Describe Functional modelling Prototyping Discuss Practical reasoning

Memorising words Technological modelling Model Explain Functional reasoning Risk management Describe Functional modelling Prototyping Discuss Practical reasoning

Questioning Strategies to promote thought and inspire inquiry in students. When teachers prepare thought provoking questions and incorporate them into their lesson plans, they engage students in learning and foster motivation and higher order thinking skills It is one of the most important dimensions of teaching and learning

“If we teach today's students as we taught yesterdays, we rob them of tomorrow ” John Dewey
