Transforming lives through learningDocument title The purpose of this professional learning pack is to scaffold your engagement with the Professional Development Video: Forest Kindergarten Approach: more to think about. It is not intended that you will complete all of the Reflection Tasks in one single sitting, nor is it intended that you will work through these in a linear fashion. Instead you should watch the whole video through once from beginning to end, then consider which of the Reflection Tasks most suits your needs. You should share your learning on Glow Early Learn using #forest You are encouraged to personalise the slides where you can, for example, by adding your logo or photographs and video. In so doing, this will act as evidence of your engagement.

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Reflection Task 1 In our setting, outdoor learning is crucial to children because…

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Reflection Task 2 Use this slide to document your learning and show your evidence. Use as many types of evidence as possible. You can add more slides if you wish.

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Reflection Task 3a Note your discussions as to how you will ensure that this experience and outcome has real meaning and relevance to children.

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Reflection Task 3b Make some plans as to how you will involve parents and partners in the delivery of the experience.

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Obesity Risk aversion Litigation Nature Deficit Disorder Anti-Social use of woodlands Reflection Task 4a Use this slide to document how you are mitigating some of these barriers. Feel free to remove these and add others to suit your own context.

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Reflection Task 4b Do you need to work more with parents and carers on how to mitigate the fear of children having ‘more organised’ and ‘sedentary’ lifestyles? Make some plans here as to how you could better involve parents and carers in outdoor pursuits.

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Reflection Task 5 Marian talks about ‘tapping into children’s emotions’ when providing play and learning experiences for and with them. When outdoors with children, watch them carefully, noting only their emotions. Use this slide to document what you saw. Copy this slide as many times as you need to. What did I see? What could this mean? What am I going to do now/next time?

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Reflection Task 6 There is a need to be a bit more conscious, when scaffolding learning outdoors, to engage all of the senses. Look carefully at how your children are playing outdoors. Is there an imbalance towards one or two of the senses? Make some notes of your findings and your agreements about how to redress the imbalance.

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Reflection Task 7 Use this slide to document your learning and show your evidence. Use as many types of evidence as possible. You can add more slides if you wish.

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Reflection Task 8 Are you sure that you are capturing the full range of learning that children are experiencing outdoors? Examine carefully a few profiles of children’s learning. Use this slide to document your analysis of the extent to which you have profiled skills and competences that children demonstrate when outdoors.

Transforming lives through learningDocument title Reflection Task 8 What skills and competences do you look for children to develop when outdoors? How have your observations of children outdoors informed your planning the indoor and outdoor environment?
