Suggested answer: ⅰ The ancient Olympic Games began about the year 776BC in Greece. ⅱ :The Olympic motto is ”Faster.Higher.Stronger”. It means that every athlete should try to run faster, jump higher and throw further.

ⅲ The Olympic Games have changed in many ways. Many sports are the same, but new sports have been added. Women are now allowed to take part in the Games. There are more competitors now. In 2000, over 10·000 athletes from 227 countries participated in the Olympics.

ⅳ To prepare for the 29th Olympics, a lot of money will be spent. New buildings and sports venues will be built. New large areas of grassland will appear. Many roads will be built or rebuilt. More and more people are learning English.The city of Beijing will take on a new look in 2008.

The second paragraph ⒊ “Some of the games in which the young men compete were…” Compete: v compete for sth with / against sb in …: try to win sth by defeating others who are trying to do the same. 竞争, 对抗, 比赛 e.g. Women compete for medals with men in some of the games. A horse that has competed in the Grand National four times. ( 参加过四次 ” 英国大赛马 ” 的马 )

n :competition (C) event in which people compete; contest. competition between / with sb for sth adj : competitive :of / involving competition n : competitor :person who competes.

“Women were not allowed to take part in the games. ⅰ take part in : join; be involved in sth; play a part in take part in / join “take part in” is used on formal occasion, but “join” isn’t Join with sb / together in doing sth / to do sth: take part with sb in an activity.
