Death of a Salesman Important Quotes

SampleQuote #1 – “He’s not the finest man in the world but a terrible thing is happening…” Context/Situation? Act I - Linda is speaking to her sons while Willy is outside for a walk. She is defending Willy’s character because Biff is insinuating that Willy is crazy and cannot make the kind of money that Charley makes.

Quote #1 – “He’s not the finest…” Importance? This is one of the first times the audience gets a hint that Willy is not mentally stable. His wife, Linda, the person who knows him best, is pleading with her sons to respect their father because he has worked all of his life to support them and has been rewarded poorly – both financially and personally. Linda begs her sons to show their father the respect he deserves, especially because he is getting older and death may not be far off. This quote could foreshadow the play’s later developments.
