The Veldt

Close Reading Questions Why does the author choose the name ‘Happy life Home’ for the house and how is this ironic? Describe how the nursery is different from what we know as a nursery. Describe some of the places you can visit if in the nursery. In your own words describe the actions of the children when the nursery is locked.

Give details on 4 things the house could do for you? Discuss why the author chose these items to discuss. On page 4, column 2 discuss the sentence structure used by the author and why it is effective. Using an expression for the story tell why was the nursery created?(page 5)

What is the screaming heard on page 6 foreshadowing? In your own words discuss why the parents blame themselves for the way the children are acting. (page 5) Write the expression from page 7 which shows the room being personified?

What is the reaction of the children when they are told they are leaving the house? How do they stop this from happening? Discuss the attitude of the children at the end of the story. What words convey this attitude? Discuss why the last sentence of the story is effective in determining the attitude of the children.
