Psalm 119:81- Hebrew Word Studies Lesson Five Hebrew Class 2014 Psalm 119:81- Hebrew Word Studies Lesson Five

Aleph (ah-lef) (vs. 1-8) – an ox – generally refers to prosperity; strength under an agricultural economy. Beth (bayth) (vs. 9-16) – a house; a tent – generally refers to the plan of God; living, or, being at home in the plan of God for your life. Gimel (ghee-mel) (vs. 17-24) – gimel is a camel; camel’s neck; soul. The camel is a beast of burden; well-traveled. Represents an extensive knowledge of Bible doctrine. Daleth (daw-leth) (vs. 25-32) – door; curtain to tent – entrance to relationship with God; entrance into the plan of God. He (hay) (vs. 33-40) – window; lattice – new perspective. Waw (wow) or Vav (vs. 41-48) – hook; nail; peg – the Word of God is the hook on which a believer hangs his life Zayin (vs. 49-56) – a weapon. Our weapon is the Word of God (prayer is our heavy artillary). Cheth (or heth) (vs. 57-64) – a fence or enclosure. The Grace of God protecting the believer. Teth (vs. 65-72) – to roll together. Concept of relationship. Yod (vs. 73-80) – a hand (viewed from the side – a hand cupped). The hand of blessing – our true security.

Psalm 119:81-88 Kaph (caf) – the palm of a hand (simply an advance on the Yod). No matter how bad things seem, you, as a believer in Jesus Christ, are in the plan of God, and in the hand of God (cf. Isaiah 49:15, 16; John 10:27-29; Romans 8:35-39). “Salvation” (vs. 81) – the hand of deliverance. “Comfort” (vs. 82) – the hand of comfort. “Judgment” (vs. 84) – the hand of judgment.

Psalm 119:89-96 Lamed (law-med) – an ox goad. An ox also represented service. An ox under an agricultural economy was the greatest producer. The ox, carrying all that great weight, quickly had their strength depleted, so they had a tendency to be lazy! So, the ox goad! It had a sharp point so that when you jabbed him, he really moved! Jab not enough to really hurt bad, but just enough to keep him going! Now, what do you suppose keeps you going?!

Psalm 119:97-104 Mem (maim) – originally signified water. Refers to the “water of the word” of Ephesians 5:26. Emphasizes the importance of Bible Doctrine. “Wiser” (vs. 98) - chakam (H2449 – TWOT 647). Often used for that wisdom which brings success – even prosperity. Represents a manner of thinking & attitude concerning life’s experiences. The wisdom of the Old Testament is quite distinct from other ancient world views – reflected in OT wisdom is the teaching of a personal God who is holy & just, & who expects those who know Him to exhibit His character in the many practical affairs of life. (See TWOT entry.)
