Physics I: Fall 2009 Room 123 Dr. Pasquini Mr. Hansen

Welcome Back to School! New year, new goals Excitement, anticipation. I want to work with you to make this the best year for you at Hartford High.

A Bit About Myself My wife and I have twin two-year-olds, Rosie and Luca. I went to college at Dartmouth, which is how I fell in love the upper valley. I did my Ph.D. in atomic physics at MIT.

Semester I and II Preview What is Physics? Physics is the study of matter and energy, forces and motion. Physics seeks to describe the behavior and structure of matter and the nature of change.

Quantum Mechanics Nuclear Matter Electrons Particles & Waves Atoms Light Universal Gravitation Kinematics (Calculus) Strong Force Special and General Relativity Electricity and Magnetism Optics Particle Physics Engineering Solid State Physics Atomic Physics Earth Science Cosmology Astronomy Chemistry Plasma Physics

Quantum & Nuclear Atoms Light Energy and Momentum Kinematics Dynamics Gravity Acceleration Linear & Circular Orbital Motion Collisions Systems Conservation Laws Gas Laws & Thermodynamic s Electricity Currents CircuitsMagnetism Waves Optics Sound Lasers Particle Physics Cosmology & Astronomy

Physics

Applications of Physics The Laser –Atoms and light in the 20 th century –Quantum physics and statistics –Control of nature

Course Syllabus Process of Science Energy and Momentum Heat and Temperature Motion Newton’s Laws Waves Light and Atoms Independent Research Electricity & Circuits Magnetism Geometric Optics Fluids Thermodynamics Gravitation Astronomy & Cosmology Quantum Physics Nuclear Physics Semester 1 Semester 2

The Math Algebra II –Substituting values into equations –Manipulating equations –Graphing –Word problems

Expectations for the Class

Discussion Fill out your information sheet. Please introduce yourself to the person who shares your table with you. Tell them, honestly, why you decided to take this class. Take 3 minutes to share one thing you want to get out of this class and one thing you are nervous about.

A Procedures Based Classroom A style of developing a classroom culture. Procedures are the predictable, established methods for performing tasks and conducting affairs. Procedures are not rules; they are the way things are done (handout).

Many Common Procedures Entering the classroom. Bellwork.

More Common Procedures Late arrival Leaving for the restroom End of class Coming to attention Asking questions / making comments Listening and responding Collecting materials Turning in work

Academic Honesty I do not allow cheating in my class. 1 st time: zero on assignment and 5% off your final grade 2 nd time: you will fail the class Signed by yourself and parent; copy to keep for yourself

Your Homework Tonight, you should obtain your materials: Binders 2” for class 5 Separator Tabs 4 color pen Graphing calc. Internet access Review the assignment procedures and set up your binder. Have your academic honesty form signed.

Resources Class website (hartfordphysics.wikispaces.com) Textbook / Handouts HippoCampus Dr. Pasquini & Mr. Hansen

Questions & Reflections I will try to end every day with a few minutes for: –Questions about what we’ve done –Questions about what we will do –Comments about what we have done The last 5 minutes of class will be for reflection.
