Challenges of Mobile ad-hoc Grids and their Applications in e-Healthcare Zhuoqun Li, Lingfen Sun and Emmanuel C. Ifeachor School of Computing, Communications and Electronics University of Plymouth

Why Mobile Ad-hoc Grids? The availability of wirelessly connected mobile devices has grown considerably in recent years and created enormous unexploited resources. Grid computing with its model of coordinated resource sharing may provide a way to utilize a wide range of resources that are normally distributed throughout a mobile ad-hoc network. The aim is to exploit the synergy between the resource sharing potential of Grid computing and the flexible, ubiquitous availability of mobile ad-hoc networks.

What would be a Mobile Ad-hoc Grid? the ad-hoc networking protocol stack incorporates the key components of Grid computing The Grid functionalities are “Mobility Aware” New functionalities may be needed to provide Quality of Service for the Grid of “Mobile Computers” Applications e.g. e-Healthcare emergency Transport (TCP, UDP ) Transport (TCP, UDP ) Network (IP) Grid Functionalities Service Discovery, Job Scheduling, etc. Grid Functionalities Service Discovery, Job Scheduling, etc. MAC PHYSICAL The Protocol Stack Fig. 1 the protocol stack of a node in the mobile ad- hoc Grid Grid Security The Mobile ad-hoc Grid

General challenges of Mobile Ad-hoc Grids The general challenges in implementing Grid functionalities in the mobile environment Include: Service Discovery: energy efficiency, latency, collision, and continuous service provisioning in network partitioning. Job Scheduling: alert for node mobility, robust in network partitioning, and fault-tolerant upon data loss. Quality of Service Provisioning: integration of network awareness, application adaptations, and resource allocation/scheduling.

Application of Mobile Ad-hoc Grid in E-healthcare Emergency: a Car accident Scenario A medical emergency taking place in a hostile environment where fixed computing/communication infrastructures are not available

Application of Mobile Ad-hoc Grid in E-healthcare Emergency: the challenging requirements On-demand access to distributed/roaming data Manageable jobs priorities Simultaneous transmission of data streams Fault-tolerant infrastructures with fault detection, logging and recovery Physical Sensor Network (Patient) Vehicular BioMed. System PDA (Police) Service Discovery (to collect clinical data) Job Submission (to make prehospital treatment) PDA (Paramedic)
