ABTEF Meeting, V. Namora Quality Assurance in the Superconducting Magnets and Circuits Consolidation (SMACC) project

V. Namora Introduction  Quality Assurance on Splices Improving the Electrical conductivity when an Quench occurs  Quality Assurance in Supermagnets

V. NamoraABTEF Meeting Objectives – QA Splices  Consolidation of 13kA superconducting splices  Consolidation of superconducting circuits  Consolidation of the cryomagnets and interconnexions

V. NamoraABTEF Meeting Consolidation of Splices Installation of a small plate of copper with 50mm long, 15mm wide and 3mm thick On ~1700 interconnections

V. NamoraABTEF Meeting QC Tests  Before Application of Shunts “Old Splices”  Machined Splice  After Machining Splices “Consolidated splice”  Busbar Cables  Insulation Box

V. NamoraABTEF Meeting QC Tests - details Before Application of Shunts “Old Splices” Visual Inspection: 1.Correct Splice Assembly 2.Absence of transversal gaps > 2mm 3.Vertical deformations 4.Local splice deformation 5.Global splice deformation Electrical Resistance Tests -R8 dip. < 10,6 μΩ -R8 Quad. < 14,3 μΩ -R16 dip. + R16 Quad.

V. NamoraABTEF Meeting QC Tests - details Machined Splice Visual Inspection: 1.Busbar Flatness 2.Busbar Thickness 3.Global splice deformation Electrical Resistance Tests -R8 dip. < 10,6 μΩ -R8 Quad. < 14,3 μΩ -R16 dip. + R16 Quad.

V. NamoraABTEF Meeting QC Tests - details After Machining Splices “Consolidated splice” Visual Inspection: 1.Absence of partly unsoldered areas 2.Solder reservoir filled 3.Shunts correctly positioned Electrical Resistance Tests -R top-side-Quad. < 2.4 μΩ -Avg. R top-side-Quad. < 1.9 μΩ -R top-side-Dip. < 2.2 μΩ -Avg.R top-side-Dip. < 1.7 μΩ -R8 dip. < 6,6 μΩ -R8 Quad. < 10,3 μΩ -R16 dip. + R16 Quad.

V. NamoraABTEF Meeting QC Tests - details

V. NamoraABTEF Meeting QC Tests - details Busbar Cables Visual Inspection: -Cables covered by a solder layer of Sn96Ag4 -Cables are clean/without visible oxide scale -Strands are not cut -Straight cables and without displaced strands -Cables well centred inside the busbar -Cable length ≥105mm

V. NamoraABTEF Meeting QC Tests -details Insulation Box Visual Inspection: -Presence of Eccobond® inside its bag -Blocking screws are in good contact between top and bottom box parts -No visible cracks of the insulation material -Correct position of the insulation box with respect to the M lines -Auxiliary busbars are correctly positioned -Insulation box satisfies dimensional tolerances height < 36mm

V. NamoraABTEF Meeting Objectives – QA Supermagnets Visual Inspections in 21 Supermagnets (Dipoles and Quadrupoles) at the surface. - Visual Inspection of Lyras - Visual Inspection of Spiders (Spools, Spider Supports) - Others Inspections (busbars isolation)

Lyras Inspection  Critical Point → Contact with the screw of MCS corrector Solution Problem V. NamoraABTEF Meeting

Lyras Inspection  What we found? Most part of the magnets had the protection against contact (plastic protection) We found 3 Magnets without the plastic protection V. NamoraABTEF Meeting

Spider Inspection Objectives:  Verify the right position of the Spider Supports  Insulation of the Spools  Insulation of Busbar around the Spider V. NamoraABTEF Meeting

Spider Inspection What we Found? -Signs of damage in the insulation V. NamoraABTEF Meeting

Spider Inspection What we Found? -Spider Supports Deformed V. NamoraABTEF Meeting

Others What we Found? -Busbars too close of the “Manchette” V. NamoraABTEF Meeting

Conclusions The biggest part of Supermagnets didn’t show any problem Most part of the problems were found in the ‘Down Side’ of the SM’s Spider Supports deformed Busbar too close of “Manchette” V. NamoraABTEF Meeting
